At the Beal Bank Regional Science Fair on March 29, freshman Maddie Ball won first place in her category and Grand Prize in Life Science in the 9-12 grade competition. Her long-term project centers on the use of copepods, macroscopic water crustaceans, to control mosquito species that spread West Nile Virus. She has also been awarded an $18,000 scholarship to Southern Methodist University, and will represent Texas in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Atlanta in May. The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF), the world’s largest international pre-college science competition, annually provides a forum for 1,500 high school students from over 40 countries to showcase their independent research. The Intel ISEF is the premiere science competition in the world exclusively for students in grades 9–12. In August she will also represent Texas at the MILSET Science Exposition in Lima, Peru.
